Two Ghosts – But Potternewton Hall Finds a Purchaser
Potternewton Hall, one of the oldest brick-built mansions in the Leeds district and about which two ghost stories are told, has been purchased by Mr. Max Rabinovitch, a wholesale jeweller, of Nassau Place, Chapeltown, Leeds.
The mansion and the estate of thirteen acres were put up for sale by auction by the Leeds firm of Bramham and Gale, but were withdrawn at £9,100. Miss M. L. Nussey was the owner-occupier.
The more popular of the two ghost stories is laid in the drive to the mansion from Potternewton Lane. The story goes that many years ago a fair lady of the Hall stabbed and killed her coachman in the stables there, the murder being one of passion.
His revenge was to drive a ghostly carriage and horses up the drive to the house, late some night in the Christmas season. It is said that the jingling of the harness and the sound of horses’ hoofs has been heard.
But the story goes one better. It declares that one night, although the drive gates were locked, the spirit coach made its journey up the drive, and that the wheels and horses’ hoof marks were found in the snow.
The second story alleges that sometimes ghostly human figures, dressed in the fashion of many years ago, can be seen dancing on a lawn.
